The death toll from a black man in New York City over the weekend is staggering.
According to New York State Police, a 38-year-old black man died Sunday night after he was shot while trying to break up a fight in Harlem’s East Village.
The victim was identified by police as John Thomas.
He had just been shot and killed.
The New York Daily News reported the victim was a father of three.
Police said he was trying to protect a woman he was with.
He died at a hospital.
A spokesperson for the New York Police Department confirmed the death.
“It’s heartbreaking,” the spokesperson said.
“We’re not saying this is the last time a black person dies, but we’re not ruling it out.”
Thomas was shot and pronounced dead at the scene.
The New York Observer reported that the victim’s sister was the first to call police.
She told police she heard two gunshots, but said it was too late.
A source told the paper that Thomas was the victim of a “random act of violence” and that he was killed by two white men.
Police are still investigating the shooting.
